Frequently Asked Questions
What is speed painting?
Speed painting is a painting technique where the artist works against a set time limit, usually from several minutes to a couple of hours. Unlike a sketch, a speed painting is considered finished when the time runs out - going back to add detail later means it is no longer strictly a speed painting.
How long does a speed painting take?
Most speed paintings take anywhere from a few minutes to about two hours. Traditional media artists may work in very short bursts, while digital painters often set aside an hour or two for a complete, rendered piece.
Why do artists practice speed painting?
Digital artists use speed painting to practice working quickly and efficiently, since digital tools remove the drying-time limits of traditional paint. It is also used as a warm-up exercise, a way to explore concept art ideas during early production, and a demonstration of painting skill.
What is the difference between a speedpaint and a timelapse video?
A speedpaint is the artwork itself, created under a time limit. A timelapse video is a recording of the painting process sped up for viewing - a normal painting session can be recorded and turned into a "speedpaint video" even if the artist actually took hours to finish it.
