Frequently Asked Questions
What is a PSD file?
A PSD file is the native layered image format of Adobe Photoshop. Unlike a flat JPG or PNG, a PSD keeps every element on its own editable layer, so you can change text, colors, shapes, and effects without rebuilding the design from scratch. That is what makes free PSD templates, mockups, and UI kits so useful for learning and prototyping.
Can I use free PSD files for commercial projects?
It depends on the license attached to each file. Some free PSDs allow commercial use, some are for personal use only, and some require attribution to the creator. Always check the license on the download page before using a file in client work or anything you sell, because free does not automatically mean free for commercial use.
How do I open a PSD file without Photoshop?
Several free tools can open and edit PSD files with layers intact, including Photopea, which runs in a browser, and GIMP. Some advanced Photoshop-only features like smart objects or complex layer styles may not translate perfectly, so layered files with heavy effects work best in Photoshop itself.
What kinds of free PSD resources are most useful for designers?
The most popular categories are website templates, UI kits, device and print mockups, icons, flyers, and business card templates. Mockups are especially handy for presenting your work to clients, since they show your design in a realistic setting using Photoshop smart objects.
